Men's Breakfast

We enjoyed another knockout breakfast by the “Andy Buletko School of Cooking” on March 20 in Robinson Hall.  After Bill Fisher opened our gathering and shared updates on the activities of the Men Of Faith Church, we began with our customary robust singing of a few hymns, thankfully accompanied by the piano skills of Steve Moore.  Following this time of praise we were treated to another fabulous breakfast served up by Andy, Greg and a handful of youth enlisted as kitchen help.  The youth were putting in hours of service for the upcoming Mission Trip to Kentucky this summer.  Thanks, Andy!  It was great as usual.

Our featured speaker for the morning was Brant Luther, Director of Stark County Family Court who oversees the Court Appointed Special Advocate/Guardian program.  Brant was introduced by Jon Bright who is himself a CASA volunteer.  Brant has served in the past as our Stark County Auditor, a Probate Court Magistrate and a city councilman in Alliance.  He has a part-time private law practice and owns a growing web-based greeting card business.

After sharing a short video on the impact of CASA volunteers in the lives of at-risk children, Brant explained how volunteers are appointed by the Family Court as voices for the children involved in court cases brought by Child Protective Services alleging neglect or dependency.  Brant shared with us how caring adults are trained, and the critical role they then play in looking out for the interests of these children at home, in school and in the courts.  Their independent observations can play a large part in advocacy for the children in a landscape filled with ill prepared parents, changing lawyers, case workers and magistrates.  Yet there are not nearly enough advocates, especially men, to fill the vast need in Stark County.  We learned a lot, were challenged and even presented an opportunity to serve if the Spirit so moves us.

If you missed this one, don’t worry, there will be other opportunities.  The next men’s breakfasts could possibly be coming up in June and September.  Notice of the next event will come out in plenty or time to invite your friends and neighbors and make your reservations.  for a time of good food and fellowship.  Be on the lookout!
